Lhasa and the Highway to Nepal
Arrived in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet and home to the palace of the Dalai Lama. The traditional Tibetan part of Lhasa is always filled with hordes of pilgrims who come at least once in a lifetime to pray and worship. It was the ending of the New Year celebration, so thousands of pilgrims were in town and glad to say only a hand full of Western tourists. Needless to say, just being Western gets lots of attention, then throw on top of that "very special look" of Antler as the locals say and it can cause quite a commotion. We stopped in the market to talk to a local man and his daughter. It caused such a curiosity - a hundred pilgrims wanting to see what was happening. The police came up and told us to start walking so the people jam could break up. In Lhasa we met up with Derek, Will and Will’s wife Karen again. All together we wanted to travel in a hired 4WD towards Kathmandu but Will and Karen fell sick and left us earlier. Still the three of us had an amazing one-week-trip to Kathmandu. We passed fabulous sceneries, stopped at least at one monastery a day and went to the most authentic hot spring I’ve ever been to. The best stop we had was Mt. Everest Base Camp…more later. Unfortunately I lost all of my Lhasa pictures while I downloaded them from my memory card – dam technology but you’ll see a fine collection of other Tibet pictures in the Lhasa Gallery.
