Kathmandu and the riots in Nepal
We arrived in Kathmandu. It was quite a drive going down from the Tibetan plateau. Everything got greener suddenly, first bushes then trees appearing along the road and finally we reached to border, crossed via the friendship bridge and caught a bus to Kathmandu where we arrived in the middle of the night – well done. Stayed in Kathmandu far too long, Antler spent a fortune on anything he could get between his fingers. I think at the end he bought 3 cubic meters of rugs, singing bowls, cloths, statues…In Kathmandu we also met up with Derek’s parents again who left us earlier in Lhasa. Yeah it was my birthday. We wanted to do something special and heard about this Mt. Everest flights where you board a small airplane, fly along the Himalayans, get a glimpse of Mt. Everest and return after one hour to Kathmandu. Well, we’ve all been to Mt. Everest just the week before but seeing it actually for an airplane was absolutely amazing. Just the view of all the highest mountains in the world from an airplane was breathtaking. In the afternoon we went to a burning ghat at Nepal’s holy river where Hindus burn their dead shortly after they died. The whole family is present but only the men do the fire preparations. The oldest sun has to light the fire. Close by is a ritual washing place in the river where Hindus take baths (upstream). We heard about an uprise of the Nepali people to dethown their king.
