A short trip through India

The Taj Mahal, Rajasthan and Delhi
Finally I made it. I arrived in India, a country I always wanted to visit. From Pokhara Antler and I took a plane to the border as no other public transport was available due to the general strike in Nepal. We had to walk all the way to the airport and hopped on a small 10 seats plane. It was night time when we arrived in Gorakhpur and we took a next train out to Varanasi on the banks of the river Ganges. Varanasi is one of the famous cities in India where Hindus burn their dead on the river banks and take a bath in the holy river Ganges. It’s quite an impressive site but full of scammers who ruin this unique experience. After we finished walking all the side streets in Varanasi and we decided to go to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. Unfortunately it was a Friday when we went to see the insides of this truly magnificent monument. But on Fridays the Taj is closed for tourist and only open for Muslims to worship. Did a sightseeing trip around Agra instead and stayed over night in the ghost town of Fatehpur Sikri and returned the next day to squeeze inside with thousands for other tourists. From here we went to Jaipur where Antler had to leave me to return to San Francisco – how sad. We spend some unforgettable weeks together and had a remarkable trip starting from Burma via Thailand via Tibet via Nepal and finishing in India. I can't thank you enough Antler for making all this happening. I made a promise to visit him in San Francisco in autumn 2006 and I hope I can make it. My trip continues through Rajasthan passing through Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodphur and Delhi. Best memories I have of Jaisalmer where I did an over night desert camel safari on my own riding on the sand dunes surrounded by nothing but sand, some grass and occasional bushes. The stars where just amazing and I think I have never ever seen that many.
