I N D O N E S I A

Volcanos and whale hunting
After I left East Timor in late June I headed North to Nusa Tengara, a group of Island East of Bali. Nusa Tengara is best known for Komodo and it’s famous Komodo dragons and various volcanos. I had a great time travelling to remote villages in the interior of Pulau Alor with my Italian friend Veronica. I also visited a whale-hunting village where fishermen hunt for spear whales with harpunes only. It's a pretty bloody spectacle but sanctioned by the WWF. I climbed volcanos in Flores with Indonesian and Indo-Austrian friends Kletus and Siti. From Nusa Tengara I went on to Java via Singapore where I met my German friend Tine who came for a visit. Together we met Devi, the younger sister of a colleague from Sydney. We also visited Jogjakarta with it’s magnificent temples on the way to Jakarta where we met Amelia, a student friend of Tine. Sumatra was the last stop in Indonesia, we experienced an earthquake of 7 points on the Richter scale, lingered around some lakes and beaches, and climbed up to a highland on the Southern Coast of Sumatra to visit excavations and stone carvings of a 3.000 years old civilisation.
